"Accuracy of Scales"

When Ascom Hasler, a manufacturer of high-precision electronic scales introduced its new postage scales, they wanted to dramatize the accuracy of its new product. To do so, the company used a 39-millimeter, 10-gauge Goldine« "scale" coin by Coincraft (asi 75260) that weighed just under one ounce - .964 ounce maximum. The coins featured the company's name and the message, "Now you've got a better choice." All sales reps received the coins to use as a selling tool and as a reminder of the new product. The coins were often used in sales presentations to potential customers who "wanted to save money" by keeping their old scales. By using the coin, a sales rep could demonstrate that a customer's old scale was likely to weigh the coin at over one ounce-ù requiring an extra 23 cents in postage. Multiplied by hundreds or thousands of one-ounce envelopes, the sales reps could explain how the old scales were actually costing businesses money. Ascom Hasler reported that using the coins helped their reps reach their highest sales levels ever.
